Thomas and his dog

These past few weeks have been a whirlwind. Unfortunately, part of the chaos involved having to put down the dog. Thomas's first definitive word was "doggy," which he yelled with joy over and over when we returned from GA when he was only about 9 months old.  Over time they developed a special bond. Thomas would climb into his chair, at which point Lucky would always perk up from her sleep under a pile of blankets and assume a position directly below Thomas, hoping to catch any leftovers Thomas did not want. Lucky was very good with Thomas, never biting him, no matter how hard he hit her.  She'd just get up and walk away. Thomas also loved taking Lucky for walks and insisted on holding her leash (even when she as too strong for him, which meant we were often chasing the leash of the dog so we could give it back to him). He would even take her for walks inside the house. He'd often stand at the top of the stairs and yell "Lucky" repeatedly until she'd emerge from her blanket pile. In the morning, he'd call for the dog to come outside and would point to her so she'd go potty.  He loved giving her treats and would tell her to "seek" (aka "speak"); however, Thomas would often get too excited and throw the treat before Lucky would even bark. When he was younger, Thomas would often throw Lucky's food into her water bowl to watch the little bits float, and later he would pour Lucky's food out on the ground so she would eat it.  Occasionally, when Lucky wrapped herself in a blanket, Thomas would try to find her.  If she were on top of the blankets, Thomas would try to curl up next to her.  We know that Thomas misses Lucky, and we distract him whenever he asks where the dog is.  When he is older we'll be happy to remind Thomas about the good times he had with Lucky.

This photo captures their relationship well.
